Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping is a freight service designed for shipments that do not require a full trailer. In an LTL move, your freight occupies a portion of a truck alongside shipments from other shippers. The carrier consolidates multiple loads onto a single trailer, which allows each shipper to pay only for the space their freight occupies. LTL is typically the right choice for shipments ranging from 150 to 15,000 pounds, though exact weight thresholds vary by carrier.
LTL pricing is based on several factors that work together to determine your final rate:
Freight class: A standardized classification system (NMFC) that rates commodities from Class 50 to Class 500 based on density, stowability, handling difficulty, and liability. Denser, easier-to-handle freight typically earns a lower (cheaper) class.
Weight: Heavier shipments generally cost more in absolute terms, but the cost per pound typically decreases as weight increases.
Distance: Rates are calculated based on origin and destination ZIP codes. Longer hauls across more carrier terminals increase cost.
Dimensions: Carriers may apply a dimensional weight adjustment if your freight is unusually large relative to its actual weight.
Accessorial charges: Additional services, such as liftgate, residential delivery, inside delivery, or limited-access pickups, incur extra fees.
Freight class is a standardized rating assigned to commodities by the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system. Classes range from 50 (densest, lowest cost) to 500 (lightest density, highest cost). To determine your freight class, you'll need to know your commodity type, dimensions, and weight. Many shipments can be reclassified by carriers at delivery if the dimensions or weight don't match the declared class—a process called a freight bill correction or a reclassification. A FLI Account Manager can help you correctly classify your freight upfront to avoid unexpected charges.
LTL transit times vary based on lane distance and the carrier's hub-and-spoke network. Short regional moves of 250 miles or less often deliver overnight or in one business day. Cross-country moves typically take three to six business days. Keep in mind that LTL freight moves through carrier terminals and is consolidated with other shipments, so transit times are estimates rather than guarantees unless you select a time-definite or guaranteed service option.
Accessorial charges are fees for services beyond standard pickup and delivery. The most frequently encountered include:
Yes. Once your shipment is picked up and a PRO number (carrier tracking number) is assigned, you can track it through our Total Vision TMS, which provides real-time visibility and status updates throughout the shipment lifecycle.
